Villa Bacula

Grdoselo, Pazin

Country: Croatia

About the village and around

A truly ‘awesome’ villa in a beautiful village.

The continental part of Istria, only 7 km away from the regional capital of Pazin, houses a hamlet by the name of Grdoselo.

There are two explanations for the town’s name: one is that it comes from the Old Croatian word “grdo” meaning “awesome” as in awe-inspiring, while “selo” still means “village”, and the other says it stems from the Italian “gardazelle” where garda means watch and zelle stands for a unit, echoing the place’s medieval past.

Grdoselo is surrounded by the green hills of rolling Istrian landscapes and woody glades. It offers a panorama of the Pazin vale, the mountains of Ucka and Cicarija, the vale and canyon of the river Butonega, its waterfalls alternating with meadows and streams.

Nearby attractions include Zelengrad, a medieval ruin dating back at least to 1102 when it appears in the Istrian Annals. Zelengrad is situated where the Grdoselo stream flows into Lake Butonega, and is surrounded with designated hiking and bike trails.

Pazin and Pazin Cave make for more local sights, together with the Fjord of Lim and its many hidden covews, while the cultural and historic treasures of Porec, Rovin,  Pula, Brijuni island lie half an hour’s drive away. The beaches and historic cafes of Opatija and theIsland of Cres are likewise within easy reach.

Grdoselo is a perfect example of a town with a rich past. It offers more than culture, however, as it also boasts gastronomic specialties made with local, homegrown foods. The neighbouring homesteads invite you for traditional cuisine and Istrian wines!
